The centrepiece of Rose Theatre Kingston’s 10-year anniversary celebrations next year will be Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing (April 13-May 6).
Starring Mel Giedroyc as Beatrice, the classic story is updated and set in a luxury spa hotel, Messina, in the Sicilian hills.
The production will use Shakespeare’s original language in a contemporary setting which “provides a social context that enhances the darker themes in Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece”.
Simon Dormandy, director, commented: “A contemporary Sicilian setting offers the perfect social context for the play: an inflexibly patriarchal world, where daughters still marry as their fathers decree; a world brittle with honour and the law of vendetta; a south-Mediterranean world where a wedding is a major community event, and a shrine is still a place where magical things might just happen.”
He added: “Not only a household name for her television presenting and comedy work, Mel is an outstandingly subtle, powerful actor, as well as a very funny one and we’re sure, an unforgettable Beatrice.”
Giedroyc’s theatre credits include Luce, Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour and The Rocky Horror Picture Show and her television credits include Miranda and The Vicar of Dibley.
She is best known for presenting The Great British Bake Off and the Mel and Sue show.
