A new UK and Ireland tour of Shrek the Musical has opened at Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre.
Additional dates have been added because of demand, and the production will be on its 24-venue national tour until January 2019.
It stars Steffan Harri as the swamp-dwelling ogre Shrek (pictured), and Call the Midwife star Laura Main as Princess Fiona, who shares the role with actor and recording artist Amelia Lily at selected venues while filming continues on the new BBC series.
Marcus Ayton is Shrek’s sidekick Donkey and Samuel Holmes is the pint-sized villain Lord Farquaad.
Nigel Harman returns as director, having made his directorial debut on the first tour.
The audiences will see Shrek and his Donkey embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona from a fire-breathing, love-sick dragon.
The musical is based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek! and the DreamWorks Animations feature film.
After Birmingham, the tour moves on to Aberdeen, Northampton, Sheffield, Cardiff, Stoke, Blackpool, Woking, Liverpool, Norwich, Canterbury, Milton Keynes, Bristol, Llandudno, Nottingham, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Plymouth, Southampton and finally Leeds (December 18-January 6).
