Mary Poppins lands back in her West End home

Mary Poppins will be returning to London in autumn 2019, back to its original West End home at the Prince Edward Theatre, writes Angie Cronin.

Zizi Strallen, who played Mary in the international tour of the musical, will be reprising her lead role. Strallen is currently playing Fran in Strictly Ballroom The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre.

Bert the chimney sweep will be played by Charlie Stemp, whose credits include his performance as Arthur Kipps in Half A Sixpence and his recent Broadway debut in Hello, Dolly!.

Mary Poppins last appeared in the West End from 2004 to 2007, and its return to the Prince Edward Theatre will end the run of Disney’s Aladdin in August 2019.

The musical is a collaboration between Disney Theatrical Productions and Cameron Mackintosh and tells the story of Mary Poppins, a magical nanny who arrives on Cherry Tree Lane to look after the children in the Banks family.

Richard Eyre will be the director of the latest production, with co-direction and choreography by Matthew Bourne and co-choreography by Stephen Mear.

The score by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman features the classic songs associated with Mary Poppins along with some new songs and additional music and lyrics by the George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
