Newcastle’s ‘Whey Aye’ will be Europe’s tallest observation wheel

The developer of an observation wheel and entertainment complex on Newcastle Quayside has revealed images and details of the £100 million project.

Called the ‘Whey Aye’, the wheel will be the biggest in Europe, at nearly 460 feet high – 16 feet taller than the London Eye.

It will be part of the ‘Giants on the Quayside’ development, which will include the 39-feet tall Geordie Giant metal statue, and a new food and drink zone called The Giant’s Quay.

There will also be a family entertainment centre with trampolines, climbing walls, a skywalk and separate café, plus a ‘Giant Sport Deck’ with five-a-side pitches, tennis courts and a virtual golf club.

Nigel Hartley, chief marketing officer of the ‘Whey Aye’ developer World Wheel Company, said: “Our development will complement Newcastle’s global reputation as a vibrant, progressive, welcoming city and help deliver one of Europe’s best waterfront experiences. We look forward to presenting our full proposals to Newcastle City Council later this year.”
