An all-female cast has been confirmed for the world premiere production of The Worst Witch, writes Angie Cronin.
It opens at Royal & Derngate this Christmas as part of the theatre’s Made in Northampton season.
An original story for the stage by Emma Reeves – who won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Children’s TV Programme and 2017 British Screenwriters Award for Best Children’s Programme – the production is based on Jill Murphy’s series of classic novels The Worst Witch.
The Worst Witch tells the story of an ordinary girl Mildred Hubble, who finds herself in an extraordinary place: a school for witches.
Playing Mildred is Danielle Bird, whose recent stage credits include The Hypocrite and Macbeth.
Taking the roles of Agatha and Miss Cackle is Polly Lister (The Snow Queen, Great Expectations).
Rachel Heaton (Passing) plays Miss Hardbroom; Rebecca Killick (Pink Mist) plays Maud; Rosie Abraham (Peter Pan Goes Wrong) plays Ethel; and Anna Crichlow (Common) plays Enid.
The cast is completed by Molly-Grace Cutler as Miss Bat/musician, Megan Leigh Mason as Miss Drill/musician, Emma Lau as Drusilla andMeg Forgan as Fenella/musician.
The Worst Witch premieres at Royal & Derngate on November 27, and will be there until December 30 before travelling on a UK tour until June 1, 2019.
It will visit venues in Sheffield, Cambridge, Hull, Derby, Canterbury, Dartford, Southampton, Malvern, Leicester, Salford, Plymouth, Norwich, Coventry, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Liverpool.
