A dedicated travel advice page for football supporters planning to attend the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany has been created by the Foreign Office.
Fans are advised that “beer can be stronger than in the UK, so drink responsibly, know your limits and respect local laws”.
The official Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) page for the tournament, which runs from June 14 to July 14, warns: “You may not be let into the stadium if you drink too much.”
Those travelling to matches across 10 stadiums in the host country are urged only to buy tickets from official providers.
“Match tickets bought through unofficial means may not be valid. If you sell tickets through unofficial means, you could be prosecuted,” the FCDO adds.
“Tickets will be electronic and you will need your mobile phone to validate them at entry. Make sure your phone is charged and take into account roaming charges in Germany – check with your phone provider before you travel.”
Both England and Scotland have qualified for Euro 2024 after Wales missed out by suffering a penalty shoot-out loss to Poland in a play-off final in Cardiff last night.
Ticket holders for matches in Germany will have access to discounted national and international train tickets, as well as a 36-hour travel pass for public transport.
However, the FCDO points out: “Transport routes around the stadiums will be very busy during the tournament. Local authorities may ask you to enter or leave the stadium by specific routes.”
Travellers to the tournament should also check information on passport validity and visa-free travel within a 90-day limit.
“Get appropriate travel insurance as soon as you book,” the FCDO adds. “Check that it covers the places you will visit, the duration of your visit and any planned activities.”
Each host city will have a football village, where fans can spend time before and during matches.
“Restrictions on what you can take into football villages and live viewing areas may vary between cities,” the official advice cautions.
The tournament kicks off with host nation Germany against Scotland on June 14 in Munich.
England’s group stage matches are against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on June 16, Denmark in Frankfurt on June 20 and Slovenia in Cologne on June 25.
Scotland go on to play Switzerland in Cologne on June 19 and Hungary in Stuttgart on June 23.
The group stages end on June 26 with rest days on June 27-28 before the knock-out round of 16 starts on June 29.
