Record breaking summer for Le Shuttle

Eurotunnel’s Le Shuttle passenger service broke new traffic records this summer despite the migrant incursion crisis in Calais.

Traffic in July and August reached new highs compared to the same two months in 2014, which was itself a record year.

Almost 658,000 vehicles used with Channel Tunnel service during the period.

More than 17,000 vehicles travelled via Le Shuttle on August 15, making it the highest daily traffic in the history of the tunnel.

The August bank holiday was also the best weekend in 20 years of operations.

More than 1,000 vehicles an hour were being loaded and transported during peak periods over the three days.

Eurotunnel chairman and chief executive, Jacques Gounon, said: “I am grateful to our ever-increasing numbers of loyal customers.

“These traffic figures demonstrate the vital role the Channel Tunnel plays in the European transport ecosystem.”
